Reduced environmental impact and energy conservation are core pillars of the Dymax mission. Over the last 30 years, Dymax light-curable materials and curing equipment have become the industry standard for fast, environmentally conscious assembly. Dymax products are readily replacing technologies that contain hazardous ingredients, produce waste, or require higher amounts of energy to process.
Dymax understands that safe ecologically friendly products benefit our customers, the environment, and us. We have created materials with attributes that lower products costs, life-cycle costs, and ecological impact. These attributes include:
Dymax Eco underlines the Dymax commitment to the environment. We are providing the following information for Environmental Health and Safety officers, government officials, and engineers to assist in making informed decisions when comparing assembly processes.
Dymax light-curable materials are 100% solids and contain no harmful solvents. Many available technologies use solvent carriers that are harmful to humans and/or the environment. Dymax has stayed ahead of VOC regulations that have become significantly more stringent and demand that manufacturers eliminate solvents.
Dymax one-component, light-curable, acrylated urethanes offer many processing advantages typically attributed to speed and reliability, such as fast cure, reliable/consistent viscosity, room temperature storage, application and cure, and long shelf life. In addition, one-component products eliminate waste from extensive purge cycles, off-ratio mixing, and static mixing tips.
All Dymax UV/visible light-curable products are compliant with the RoHS directives 2002/95/EC and 2003/11/EC and do not contain restricted substances, ensuring global availability.
Dymax endorses the outcome of the REACH program. We are pleased to report that we have registered all affected substances used at Dymax with the centralized database maintained by the European Chemical Agency (ECHA) in Helsinki.
Dymax preparations contain no substances of very high concern (SVHC) as reported on the ECHA candidate list evaluated, as indicated in the below letters.
Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA)
Dymax adhesives, coatings, and sealants do not contain PFOA (Perfluorooctanoic Acid). PFOA is used by companies to make fluoropolymers for use in coatings, non-stick cookware, and all weather clothing. There is a concern at the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) because scientists are finding levels of PFOA in many people throughout the world. PFOA is a man-made chemical and does not occur naturally in the environment. It is very persistent in the environment.
DEHP and Other Phthalates
Di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) is a plasticizer added to polyvinyl chloride (PVC) to make the normally rigid plastic more flexible. Many companies, especially those in the medical device industry, are requiring suppliers to inform them of DEHP or other phthalate use. The FDA issued a health warning advising the public that DEHP could leech out of PVC and pose a health risk in certain high risk groups. Specifically, there are concerns pertaining to the effects on the development of the male reproductive system. More information is available from the FDA website.
Perfluorooctane Sulfonates (PFOS)
Dymax is pleased to announce that we do not intentionally add perfluorooctane sulfonates (PFOS) to any of our adhesives, coatings or sealants. Perfluorooctane Sulfonates are highly fluorinated chemical compounds that are persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic (PBT). PFOS and related compounds are commonly used in the textile, carpet, and paper industries because they provide grease, oil, and water resistance. More information about the hazards associated with PFOS can be found in the following document https://www.oecd.org/dataoecd/23/18/2382880.pdf.
Animal derived ingredients/Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy
TSE's (Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy's) such as BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy) are a family of diseases found in humans and animals. TSE's cause severe and fatal neurological symptoms in both species. BSE has been linked to a new variant of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans. More information on BSE can be found at https://www.who.int/zoonoses/diseases/bse/en/. Dymax is pleased to announce that we do not use any animal derived ingredients to produce our light and activator cured adhesives, coatings or sealants.
Conflict Minerals in the Democratic Republic of Congo
Hillary Rodham Clinton Secretary of State Washington, DC July 22, 2010:
"Last year in the Democratic Republic of Congo, I spoke out against the trade in "conflict minerals" that has funded a cycle of conflict there that has left more than 5 million people dead since 1998, displaced countless more, and spawned an epidemic of sexual and gender-based violence. President Obama has now signed into law a measure that will require corporations to publicly disclose what they are doing to ensure that their products don't contain these minerals. The DRC has formally expressed its support for this law and has thanked both the executive and legislative branches of our government. This is one of several steps we are taking to stop this illicit and deadly trade." Dymax is pleased to announce that we do not use conflict mineral ingredients to produce our UV/visible and activator cured coatings, adhesives and sealants.
Arsenic is a semi-metal element that is odorless and tasteless. "It enters drinking water supplies from natural deposits in the earth or from agricultural and industrial practices. Arsenic has been linked to cancer of the bladder, lungs, skin, kidney, nasal passages, liver, and prostate. Non-cancer effects can include thickening and discoloration of the skin, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, numbness in hands and feet, partial paralysis, and blindness1. Dymax is pleased to announce that we do not intentionally add or use arsenic in any of our light or activator curing adhesives, coatings, or sealants.
Bisphenol A (BPA)
Bisphenol A (BPA) is an industrial chemical that has been present in many hard plastic bottles and metal-based food and beverage cans since the 1960s.
Studies employing standardized toxicity tests have thus far supported the safety of current low levels of human exposure to BPA, however, on the basis of results from recent studies using novel approaches to test for subtle effects, both the National Toxicology Program at the National Institutes of Health and FDA have some concern about the potential effects of BPA on the brain, behavior, and prostate gland in fetuses, infants, and young children1. Dymax is pleased to announce that we do not use Bisphenol A (CAS #80-05-7) in any of our light or activator curing adhesives, coatings, or sealants.
Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is a ubiquitous plastic used in many different industries and markets. Unfortunately, PVC is persistent, bio-accumulative and toxic (PBT) to the environment. PVC uses a variety of different additives from phthalates, lead, cadmium, organotins for stabilizing, increasing flexibility. Many of these chemicals leech out of the PVC when land-filled and have the potential to contaminate water supplies. These potentially contaminated water supplies may impact the health and safety of the people around the landfills as the chemicals work their way up through the food chain. Dymax is pleased to announce that we do not use polyvinyl chloride in any of our light or activator curing adhesives, coatings, or sealants.
